(NEWSnet/AP) — “Challengers” won the box office this weekend with $15 million in ticket sales, according to studio estimates Sunday.

It opened in 3,477 locations in the U.S. and Canada.

Ticket sales from large format screens, including IMAX, comprise about 40% of opening weekend gross sales.

“Challengers” was planned for release in fall 2023, but when actors went on strike, the studio made the decision to move it to late-April 2024.

Reviews for the R-rated movie have been favorable. It currently has an 88% on Rotten Tomatoes and got a B+ CinemaScore from opening day audiences. Women made up 58% of ticket buyers, who also skewed younger overall: 41% were ages 18-24.

Second place for the weekend went to the faith-based film “Unsung Hero,” which made an estimated $7.8 million at 2,832 locations.
